An environment of memory and tranquillity
The property Moinho do Avô Tó has about 3,600m2 and is located in the Serra de Aire e Candeeiros Natural Park.
The vegetation is typical of the area, pines, holm oaks and oaks, and shrubs characteristic of the region, rosemary, lavender, oregano, among others.
At the back of the house there is a small vegetable garden and some fruit trees: apple trees, pear trees, quince trees, cherry trees, fig trees, pomegranate trees, as well as olive trees.
Chemicals are not used to maintain the garden and the entire outdoor space, which allows for the development of seasonal wild flowers and the existence of small insects, namely butterflies and bees, and, at night, fireflies.
There is also a wide variety of birds that can be observed.
In a lower area, and therefore protected from the wind, is the swimming pool with a porch, equipped with a table, chairs and sun loungers.
There are also two barbecues outside, one in the house area, the other in the mill area.
In the restoration of the mill and the house, the original techniques and materials were preserved. Lime was used in the mill, the windows and doors are made of wood, the floor is made of wood from the mill and clay tiles from the region in the house and in one of the rooms there is a large traditional fireplace.
A partnership was established with a local weaving centre that, using natural wool and vegetable dyes, produced rugs, pillows and blankets used in the decoration of the space.
The bed linen is made of cotton, and, like the towels, is of Portuguese production.
In the house and in the mill, decorative elements and traditional pieces from the region were used, clay pieces such as jugs and bowls, clay dishes and Bunho benches (handcrafted from reeds that grow on the banks of the Tagus).
All the furniture is made of wood and is characteristic of the region, such as tables and benches, and the wooden armchairs, widely used in the villages in the area, also contain Alcobaça chita (traditional Portuguese cotton fabric).
The white colour predominates, both in the mill and in the house, and natural paints were used for the painted wood.
